ICSE Class 7 Maths: understand the syllabus, find the next step

If a child can copy an algebra solution but cannot start a new one, the missing step may be turning the story into a relationship.

Explore the topics below, try two explained examples and use a six-question check to see where your child needs help. For individual support, BananaLearn offers one-to-one online Maths tutoring.

ICSE Class 7 Maths syllabus: a parent’s map

CISCE Class 7 brings rational-number reasoning together with percentages, algebra, geometry and averages. A teacher should check both the calculation and the interpretation of the result.

Source and scope. CISCE primary/upper-primary framework, first published in 2016 and currently hosted by CISCE. This is a school framework, not one prescribed textbook or a newly issued 2026 chapter list. This is a skill summary, not a replacement for the official syllabus and its exclusions.

  • Integers and rational numbers

Explain operations and signs; compare fractions/decimals and use powers.

  • Sets

Distinguish equal/equivalent sets, count finite sets and use a universal set when specified.

  • Ratio, percent and commercial arithmetic

Use unit rates, percentage bases, profit/loss and simple interest appropriately.

  • Algebra

Collect like terms, form and solve simple linear equations and test a result.

  • Lines and triangles

Use angle conditions, triangle properties and the required constructions.

  • Mensuration

Connect area/perimeter methods to the relevant dimensions, including circles at the taught level.

  • Data and chance

Calculate mean, median and mode and interpret simple experiments and graphs.

What to check before starting harder work

Make letters, fractions and signs feel connected

Explain fractions, signed numbers and multiplication; understand equality as two expressions having the same value.

Keep expressions and equations separate. An expression such as 3x + 5 can be evaluated when x is known; an equation such as 3x + 5 = 20 can be solved for an unknown.

Use a blank sheet and let your child show a method. Record the first point where help is needed: reading the question, choosing a representation, carrying out a calculation or explaining the answer. That observation makes a tutoring conversation more specific than “Maths is weak”.

Two examples that reveal the reasoning

These are original teaching examples, not copied textbook answers or predictions of an exam question.

Worked example 1

Profit is compared with cost

A shop buys a board game for ₹ 400 and sells it for ₹ 460. Find the profit percentage.

Profit is compared with the cost, not the selling price.

Swipe across the diagram to see the full explanation.

Profit is compared with the cost, not the selling price.

Work it through. Profit = 460 − 400 = ₹ 60. Compare that gain with the original cost: 60/400 × 100 = 15%. Dividing by ₹ 460 instead would calculate the gain as a proportion of selling price, which is a different question.

What to notice: Underline the base quantity before setting up a percentage.

Worked example 2

The middle is not the average of any two values

Find the median of 9,3,7,4,12.

Work it through. Order the values: 3,4,7,9,12. The middle value is 7. The mean is 35 ÷ 5 = 7 here too, but that equality is a feature of this data, not a general rule. Changing 12 to 22 keeps the median 7 but changes the mean to 9.

What to notice: A counterexample helps distinguish two measures that happened to agree.

A short Class 7 Maths check, with explained answers

Try these before opening the answers. Use drawings or working; speed is not the aim. This samples a few skills and is not a full syllabus test.

  1. Calculate−6 × 4.

    Show answer and reasoning

−24; four groups of negative six.

  2. Solve 3x − 5 = 16.

    Show answer and reasoning

    x = 7; 3 × 7 − 5 = 16.

  3. A ₹ 600 item is sold for ₹ 690. Find profit percent.

    Show answer and reasoning

    15%; 90/600 × 100.

  4. Find simple interest on ₹ 2,000 at 5% per year for 2 years.

    Show answer and reasoning

    ₹ 200; 2,000 × 5 × 2 /100.

  5. Find the median of 8,2,6,4.

    Show answer and reasoning

5; sort 2,4,6,8 and average the two middle values.

  6. Give the mode of 2,3,3,5,8.

    Show answer and reasoning

    3; it occurs most often.

Use the result to choose the next step

  • Correct answer and clear explanation: change the numbers or context and check transfer.
  • Correct method, calculation slip: practise the specific operation and use an estimate or inverse check.
  • Unsure how to begin: return to an object, drawing or simpler example of the same idea before assigning more questions.

A short check cannot diagnose a learning condition or establish full mastery. Keep the actual working to discuss with the school teacher or tutor.

A focused learning sequence you can adapt

Choose one priority from the school chapter and the practice above. These are four learning steps, not a promise that every learner finishes in four lessons.

  1. Step 1. Translate a small situation into a picture and an expression.
  2. Step 2. Keep each operation visible when solving an equation.
  3. Step 3. Substitute the answer back into the original statement.
  4. Step 4. Mix numerical, graphical and verbal versions of the same relationship.

After each step, keep one independent attempt and one note about the help needed. Move on when the explanation holds up in a changed example; revisit the prerequisite when it does not.

Go deeper into the relevant concepts

Use the lesson that matches the difficulty you observed. These topic guides may carry another grade label because a prerequisite can be introduced or revisited at different times in different schools.

Explore Maths practice games for extra practice. A game score is one piece of information; pair it with a spoken or written explanation.

When one-to-one ICSE Maths tuition may help

Bring the current textbook, one independently attempted question and the school’s next topic. A tutor can use the working to separate a prerequisite gap from a new topic that simply needs clearer explanation.

  • Individual attention: one child and one teacher in a 50-minute online class.
  • First session: request a free 50-minute session and discuss the teaching fit and next priorities.
  • Ongoing plan: agree the topics, schedule and how progress will be reviewed before committing.
  • Prices: check the current pricing page. Packs are 16, 32 or 64 or more classes of 50 minutes; they are not purchased hours.

Maths is our priority. English and Science tutoring are also available; ask about the relevant school course. Availability and curriculum fit are confirmed before ongoing lessons.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need tuition for every ICSE Class 7 topic?

Not necessarily. Start with the school’s current chapter and ask your child to explain a question without prompts. If the difficulty is confined to one prerequisite, a focused plan may be more useful than repeating every chapter.

Will you follow our school textbook?

Share the book title, edition and chapter list. CISCE provides a framework or syllabus, while schools can use different books and sequences. Agree the relevant topics with the tutor before continuing.

How do we judge whether the first session helped?

Keep one question your child needed help with. Later, try a similar question with changed numbers and ask for an explanation. Look for more independent reasoning, not only a higher score on a familiar exercise. One session does not establish mastery.

What happens before we pay for ongoing classes?

Request the free 50-minute first session. Discuss the topic, teaching fit and available time. Ask for the next learning priorities and confirm the current paid plan on the pricing page. Class packs count 50-minute classes, not hours.

Can we join from outside India?

Share your country, local time zone, school curriculum and preferred times. Availability and curriculum fit must be confirmed. For CBSE or ICSE schools overseas, include the class and textbook; for another curriculum, use the international tutoring page.
