NAPLAN 2027 Year 5 Numeracy: Original Practice & Review

A fair practice question checks the maths—not whether a child already knows a test screen. Use official familiarisation for the interface and original problems for the reasoning.

Use original Australian-context Year 5 number, measurement and data problems, with explained answers and a calm review plan linked to official NAPLAN resources.

Separate the official assessment from this practice

NAP’s official key-dates page gives the 2027 NAPLAN window as 10–22 March. It also directs families to the public demonstration site for year-round familiarisation. Confirm your school’s arrangements rather than assuming every child takes every domain on the same day.

This is an early Year 5 numeracy preparation resource in an Australian context. All questions and diagrams are original BananaLearn work, not an official NAPLAN test, a copied sample or an accurate prediction of an individual proficiency result. The future calendar is confirmed; measured rising search demand is not.

Choose a calm diagnostic routine

Try a small selection independently, then ask the child to explain one method. Record the specific idea that needs work—such as a clock interval, a decimal place value or the meaning of a graph key. Follow with a changed example on another day.

A short original set does not reproduce the adaptive online assessment or its scoring. Use the official demonstration route to explore the actual interface and accessibility features with the school’s guidance. Do not turn an unfamiliar screen action into a conclusion about a child’s mathematical understanding.

Worked ticket problem: read the quantity

For a fictional community activity, an adult ticket costs A$8.50 and a child ticket A$5.75. Two adults and three children cost 2 × 8.50 + 3 × 5.75 = A$34.25. If A$40 is paid, change is A$5.75.

The ticket prices and event are invented. Write the number of each kind before multiplying. A calculation such as 8.50 + 5.75 finds one of each, not the requested family total. Keep dollars and cents consistent through the steps.

Worked time and measurement cases

A session starts at 14:35 and lasts 50 minutes. Twenty-five minutes reaches 15:00 and the remaining twenty-five reaches 15:25. If a drink container holds 1.5 L, it holds 1500 mL. Six equal servings of 250 mL exactly use that amount.

These problems test two different bases: hours use 60 minutes, while litres convert by 1000 millilitres. Do not treat clock notation as a decimal or transfer the same conversion factor to every measurement unit. Label the unit before performing an operation.

Data questions: use the key and category

Suppose a fictional picture chart shows three whole symbols and one half-symbol for a category, with each whole symbol worth 4 responses. That category has 14 responses. A second category with two whole symbols has 8, so the difference is 6 responses.

A chart of responses does not automatically count unique people if repeated responses were allowed. The title and stated collection method determine the interpretation. A visually longer row is not enough for a numerical answer unless the scale or key is known.

Shapes and fractions: show the model

A rectangular garden bed is 7 m by 3 m. Its perimeter is 20 m and area is 21 m². A border uses the first quantity; covering the bed uses the second. If one quarter of 28 seedlings are herbs, there are 7 herbs and 21 other seedlings under the stated two-category split.

A learner should explain the equal groups or the shape dimensions, not only recite a formula. If the diagram is not to scale, use the supplied dimensions. If a problem asks for an exact count of objects, check that the fraction produces a whole-number answer in the given situation.

Keep the next step specific

Use the record to name the concept and an independent changed check. For example, after an error with 14:35, try 09:45 plus 40 minutes and explain the hour bridge. A new example checks whether the child can transfer the method.

Parents can discuss persistent concerns with the school using a concrete attempted question. This guide does not diagnose a learning need, predict a NAPLAN result or claim a tutoring outcome. Its role is a clear small practice set alongside the official familiarisation resources.
